Women's/Treble Chorus:
A Canticle of Blessing SSAA Chorus, Tibetan Singing Bowls/Handbells/Chimes (with piano or violin)An emotional tour de force, this multi-movement work is based on selected excerpts from The Diary of Anne Frank. Spanning more than two years of hiding in the annex, the texts and music portray a psychological progression from fear and despair to strength and hope. This moving work for womens choir includes lyrical vocal lines, lush harmonies, and strong string quartet writing (or piano reduction). The seven movements are designed to be performed as a whole, but are also suitable for performance in various combinations.
Originally the second movement from Breath of the Mountains: A Folk Suite, this setting of a Basque text has an ethnic rhythmic ostinato which creates the mood for a frank conversation between a young granddaughter and her grandmother. A tom-tom and/or cello can easily be added to the piano left hand ostinato for additional color.
Holy, Holy, Holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come, is the text of this reverent, ethereal, and flowing setting for treble choir, originally the second movement of Gloria, for chorus and orchestra.
The first movement from Anne Frank: A Living Voice, it is an excellent stand-alone piece from the larger work. Using texts excerpts dated July 1942 and January 1943 from Anne Franks Diary, this work reflects the grim reality of war and her situation in hiding. The music begins introspectively and builds to great intensity, ending quietly.
A joyful and high-energy piece, this work is based on a tune from the American shape note tradition from The Southern Harmony, 1835, and a text from 1742. Rhythmically active, the altos and viola accompany the melody in the soprano; this evolves to canonic treatment in the second verse, and a change of key and counterpoint in the third verse. Fun, loved by all, and a great opener or closer!
Sung in English and Hebrew, the lyrical verses alternate with an energetic, canonic refrain, followed by bold and meditative sections. Excellent for Shabbat services.
The fourth movement of a larger work for womens choir and string quartet, Anne Frank: A Living Voice, this piece uses excerpts from Anne Franks Diary dated February 1944 and March 1944. These texts show how Anne was able to find meaning and beauty in nature in the midst of hiding in the secret annex. The music is full of motion and life.
A beautiful and heart-felt song for treble choir in a popular idiom that captures the joy of friendship and the difficulty of saying good-bye. Long melodic lines, harmony, lower alto parts
